In Canada where I am from, I was never asked what my blood type is, except perhaps on a medical questionnaire. After coming to Korea, I would be occasionally asked what my blood type was, and many were surprised that I didn’t even remember. In Korea, people take the notion somewhat seriously that your blood type suggests what your personality would be like.
Waiting for a train in Oksu station, I stumbled upon a book vending machine. The vending machine sells a variety of books, including a few best-selling novels, business self-help books, and English study books, but what really catches the eye are the books on the different blood types – A, B, AB, and O. I imagine each book outlines the expected personality of people of each blood type, perhaps even giving relationship or other life advice based on the personality.
Here’s a poster of a Korean movie from 2005 called “My Boyfriend is Type-B” (B 남자친구).
